Deciding on our voting system deserves a fair process.

How should Britain choose the voting system used to elect its Parliament?

It's one of the biggest questions our country can ask. We believe it deserves a process that is trusted, independent and based on evidence.

How should Britain choose the voting system used to elect its Parliament?

It's one of the biggest questions our country can ask. We believe it deserves a process that is trusted, independent and based on evidence.

That's why we are calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.

The Commission would bring together independent experts and a representative Voters' Forum to examine whether our current voting system still fairly reflects how people vote – and, if not, what would.

It wouldn't begin with a pre-determined outcome or recommend a particular voting system from the outset. Instead, it would gather evidence, hear from the public, examine the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches and make recommendations based on its findings.

The aim is simple: to ensure that any future decision about how we elect our MPs is made through an independent, transparent and evidence-led process that the public can trust.

Support for the proposal has been growing in Parliament, with MPs from different political backgrounds recognising that a question as important as electoral reform deserves careful consideration rather than being decided by whichever government happens to be in power.

The National Commission is one of the proposals sitting at the heart of our Fair Votes work through Bigger Than Politics.

If you'd like to learn about how the Commission would work, you can explore more here.

If you agree that we should have an independent process to examine the voting system, please add your name to our petition and help build support for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.
