Democracy isn't just about counting votes.
It's also about whose voices shape the debate before those votes are cast and after power is won.
A healthy democracy is full of competing ideas.
People should campaign for causes they care about. Businesses should share expertise. Charities should advocate for change. Citizens should organise around issues they believe in.
The problem begins when some voices have far more influence than everyone else.
When money means access
More money is flowing into British politics than ever before, and much of it comes from a small number of wealthy donors.
There is no cap on political donations in the UK.
An individual can donate thousands of pounds. They can donate millions. It’s entirely legal.
But when a small number of people can contribute sums far beyond the reach of ordinary citizens, questions about fairness become unavoidable.
Large donations don't just fund campaigns. They can open doors.
Most people will never attend private fundraising dinners, meet senior politicians behind closed doors or have regular opportunities to make their case directly to decision-makers.
Large donors often can.
The people in the room shape the conversation. They influence which issues get attention, which concerns are prioritised and which voices are heard.
Who's Influencing Politics?
At the same time, it is becoming harder to see where political money comes from.
Loopholes in our laws allow shell companies, unincorporated associations and other opaque funding structures to make political donations and it’s difficult to identify the true source of this money.
Cryptocurrency and digital funding channels are also creating new challenges for transparency.
Influence is also exercised through a powerful lobbying industry, campaign groups and advocacy networks whose funding is not always visible to the public.
Are The Rules Strong Enough?
Our rules haven’t kept up.
The Electoral Commission needs stronger powers to investigate and enforce election law.
Without strong independent oversight, even good rules become difficult to enforce.
The result is predictable.
People begin to wonder whether money buys influence, whether hidden funding is entering politics and whether everyone really has an equal voice.

The Electoral Commission should have the powers and independence it needs to enforce the rules effectively.

A democracy where influence is earned through public support, not financial power.
Where people can see who is funding politics and who is trying to influence public debate.
Where everyone has a fair chance to be heard.
And where no one can buy a louder microphone than everyone else.
Fair influence means everyone has a chance to shape the debate.
Fair votes ensure those choices are reflected in the outcome.
